When we have people in our lives that use substances in a way that bother us it can impact us in ways that are not always understood. Sometimes this can be people we care about deeply for a long time or people newer to us in our current life. Either way, if someone close to you, such as a family member, friend, coworker, roommate, or neighbor has or has had difficulties with using drugs and/or alcohol our lives can be affected in many ways. What do you do? What do you say to them that will be helpful to them and you? How do you behave when you are with them or think about them?
These questions can often be daunting to take on. What if other’s drug and/or alcohol problem was in your past...maybe as a young person growing up? Being exposed to all this can often lead to issues in our current life such as depression, anxiety, problems in relationships (i.e., dating, friends, family, marriage, and maybe even professors), feelings/thoughts of past difficult times that seem to be happening again now, and even trouble being able to get close to others in the way we want. The good news is that all this can be overcome and getting what you want out of your life is very much achievable. At Compassionate Counseling and Consulting Services, PLLC we can help with these types of issues and provide other services that can be found here.
More for college students:
If any of the above rings a bell for you, please reach out and we can discuss more. Being in college can have new and unique experiences with some being wonderful and others being uncomfortable. Going to parties can be tough sometimes. Ever go and feel nervous or anxious about joining the crowd? How do you handle that? Sometimes drinking more than you normally due to ease the fear helps get you into the mix. How about learning to do that in a different way, one that fits to more of who you are? What about being nervous going to a study group, presentation, or campus event (especially the ones with food)? Sometimes it can be scary meeting new people and thoughts that don’t feel good about one self can get in the way. Let’s overcome all this and find ways to be comfortable with where you live and who you truly are. You deserve it.
